Nimona
Motion Graphics Supervisor | DNEG Animation
As Motion Graphics Supervisor for Nimona, I creatively led & managed a team of 10 MGFX Designers in crafting a Kingdom’s worth of holographic visuals.
My responsibilities included bidding, scheduling, and overseeing all Motion Graphics for the entire production, including the main title, end credits, and teaser trailer.
The project featured a unique medieval-future blend, with elements like monster-themed burger joints, drag queen nightclubs, and neon-lit jousting events.
Together, we designed and animated over 380 unique assets across 38 sequences, covering approximately 500 shots.
Role
The MGFX team designed and implemented hundreds of holographic visuals for the film, including medieval-inspired business logos, advertisements, banners, military propaganda, and LGBTQ+ flags.
These assets were seamlessly integrated throughout the Kingdom, enhancing the immersive quality of the environments. They not only enriched the overall aesthetic but also often influenced the environmental lighting, contributing significantly to the film's distinctive look and feel.
Kingdom Holograms
The Director’s desk terminal was rigged so animators could manipulate individual elements within the build.
Therefore characters could be animated to interact and control the motion graphics live within Maya, using the motion graphics for character performance.
This is probably my favourite piece of Motion Graphics on the show and that's mostly because of the unique way the character interacts with the graphics.
She doesn't just palm or swipe screens around, she holds panels between her finger tips, which feels really different for this type of tech.
Institute Ui
A 3D hologram with layered geometry and an angular design, featuring diamond patterns that tie into the institute's overall look.
It’s one of the most striking assets in the show, grabbing attention with its bold, distinctive style.
Jumbotron
Custom graphics were designed for the entire train carriage, showcasing brands created specifically for this medieval-future world. Each design had both normal and glitching states, adding a dynamic and immersive layer to the environment.
Subway Train
The MGFX team designed animated 2D sparkles for Nimona’s transformations, which were seamlessly integrated into the larger FX transformation sequences. These sparkles added a playful and dynamic touch to her shape-shifting moments.
